TIF focuses significant resources on supporting patients throughout the world with one objective: to improve survival and the quality of life of every affected individual.
For achieving this goal, TIF established a programme of sponsorship in 1995. The purpose of the sponsorship scheme is to support the organisation of local, national or regional educational events related to thalassaemia, and to fund the translation of TIF’s publications into new languages, or the writing of a new publication on thalassaemia in the local language, subject to previous approval by the TIF Board of Directors.
The program includes the following activities:
- Financial support for the participation of patients, parents and health professionals in educational events organised by TIF or other related health organisation
- Financial support for national thalassaemia organisations to organise educational programmes related to thalassaemia
- Financial support for projects
- Donations of consumables
Eligible for sponsorship are:
- Paediatricians and haematologists who have been involved in the medical care of thalassaemia for more than one year at a governmental or clinical hospital in a low-resource country
- Patients, parents of patients, members of National Thalassaemia Associations (NTAs) and members of TIF from low resource countries.
Eligible applicants must ensure that the following prerequisites are met:
- Time limit set for the duration of the project
- Estimated budget
- In the case of publications, three different quotations obtained from local suppliers
Eligibility criteria for financial support of projects:
- Maximum two years duration
- Focus on the clinical management or prevention of thalassaemia.
- Projects should be undertaken in collaboration with patients/parents’ national associations (members of TIF).
- Projects should be carried out in a university medical centre or one recognised by the local government.
Eligible applicants must include in their application information about the duration of the project; its estimated budget, and in the case of publications, three different quotations obtained from local suppliers.
Donations programme
TIF may donate consumables including pumps, filters or needles to patients in need. Eligible for these donations are patients/parents’ organisations – whether or not they are members of TIF – that are in need and are located in low-resource counties. Also eligible are individual patients in critical condition as a result of war or health epidemics.
