The PBSA was established following a hearing at the European Parliament in 2002 on threats to blood supply in Europe, attended by representatives of eight patients’ organisations. The founding organisations of the PBSA, although representing a diverse range of diseases, share the common goal to advocate for the highest level of blood safety for all in Europe.
The mission of the PBSA is to advocate for the highest standards of blood safety for all in Europe. It acts as advocate for the fundamental right and duty to safety of all patients in need of blood transfusions and blood products, and aims to become a point of reference for national health authorities and European institutions regarding the patient’s perspective on blood safety.
The first PBSA Board of Directors was elected in 2005 and consists of representatives of patients’ organisations from Austria, Cyprus, Italy and the United Kingdom. TIF President Mr Panos Englezos was elected as its first Chairman.
PBSA is registered as a non-profit non-governmental organisation in Cyprus, with its offices hosted by the Nicosia headquarters of the Thalassaemia International Federation.
