The radical improvements in prevention and management of β-thalassaemia major that have been taking place in the last three decades, primarily in the West, have led to significant progress in thalassaemia prevention and treatment.
Thanks to these improvements, patients with β-thalassaemia major can now enjoy an increased survival rate. However, complete cure and life without complications to ensure a better quality of life, have not yet been achieved. One of the main causes is insufficient education about the disease, expected to empower patients and eradicate insufficient compliance to prevention and treatment.
