The International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations (also known as FIODS)
The goals of the IFBDO are (i) self-sufficiency in the member states in blood from voluntary, unpaid blood donors and (ii) improvement of confidence in the national blood supplies, i.e. by harmonizing the minimum security standards for donations, inspection etc. TIF membership represents many hundreds of thousands of patients with haemoglobin disorders, who depend on an adequate and safe supply of blood and other blood components for their livelihood.
Therefore, given the importance for TIF of policies concerning blood adequacy and safety for all patients with thalassaemia around the world, TIF is closely collaborating with FIODS.
Some of the health-related policies focused on and promoted by IFBDO include:
- Promote self-sufficiency in the member states in blood from voluntary, unpaid blood donors
- Improve confidence in the national blood supplies as much as possible, i. a. by harmonizing the minimum security standards for donations, inspection etc.
