TIF’s 2nd Pan-European Conference on Haemoglobinopathies attracted over 500 participants from 34 countries, including 19 EU member states to Berlin

More than 500 patients, parents, doctors and other stakeholders from all over Europe gathered in Berlin on 13–14 March 2010 for the largest yet regional conference on haemoglobin disorders. The conference was organised by TIF in partnership with Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin and co-funded by the European Commission in the framework of its Health Programme. Its theme this year was “Patients and health professionals together for optimal care”.

Due to unprecedented interest, the conference had to be moved at the last moment to a larger venue. Andel’s Hotel Berlin, located in the eastern section of the city near the historical Alexanderplatz square, provided comfortable and modern surroundings for the sessions and exhibition. In recognition of the very diverse audience, translation facilities were available from English into German, French, Italian and Greek.

A programme packed with information
The focus of the 2nd Pan-European Conference was on sharing best practices for optimal treatment and encouraging the empowerment of patients living with these disorders. During two intense days, participants learned from some of the best-known names in the scientific community, and shared views and experiences in discussions.

The programme prepared by the Scientific Committee – including not only some of the most renowned experts in the field of haemoglobinopathies, but also several patient representatives – offered comprehensive medical information and sessions to address the particular concerns of patients and their families. There were topics of interest to doctors and patients alike, and health professionals were able to claim 13.75 CME (continuing medical education) units awarded by the European Haematology Association.

A comprehensive report of the outcomes of the conference will be prepared and published online in due course.
